Dr. Döhner studied medicine at the Universities of Regensburg, Freiburg and Montpellier (France). Following this, he trained in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the University of Heidelberg. He was a post-doctoral associate in the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology and the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Division of Medical Genetics, University of Minnesota. In 1999, he became a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ulm.
His main research interests are in the identification, characterization and clinical diagnosis of genetic changes in hematologic malignancies, including both acute and chronic leukemias and he is an expert in the conduct of clinical trials in AML.
Dr. Döhner is Chair of the German-Austrian AML Study Group (AMLSG), a large, multi-institutional study group for the treatment of AML in Germany and Austria and a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. He is a member of the Clinical Advisory Committee, WHO Classification of Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasms 2016 and a member of the Scientific Committee of the European School of Haematology (ESH), the Scientific Committee of the International Workshop of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (IWCLL) and the Nomination Committee of the European Hematology Association (EHA).
